Help with First Parish Calendars
Overview
There are 3 calendars in the Happenings/Upcoming Events webpage. Click on an event in one of these calendars, and an event window opens that shows more information. Click the X on the upper right to close the window.
Time Period
The tabs at the upper right of a calendar let you view by week or month, or see the events listed as an agenda.
Arrows
The arrows at the upper left of a calendar let you move back and forth in time. Clicking the "Today" button takes you to the current week or month.
Reminders
If you don't already have a Google Account, skip this Reminders section until you are comfortable with using calendars.
If you click on an event and then click on "more details" at the bottom of the event window, a webpage opens with a rectangle of event details. There should be an "Options" rectangle on the right. The top area in the Options rectangle is "Reminder".
If you don't see an Options rectangle, the top of the webpage should have a "Sign up for Google Calendar" link. To get reminders and the other advanced services below, you need to create a unique name and password for a Google Account. The account name is called Email because it will also work with gmail. When you return to the calendar, click on the event that you want a reminder for.
You should now be in the Reminder area of the "Options" rectangle on the right. Click on the "Add a reminder" link, and you can specify a pop-up window or email reminder. Click on the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the webpage to have your reminder registered.
Calendar Webpage
After you are comfortable with using the calendars in the Upcoming Events webpage, you may want to learn more. If you click on the "Google Calendar" button on the lower right of the "First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington" calendar, a Google Calendar webpage opens. Here you can see calendars superimposed on each other, each one a different color. To the left of the main calendar is a calendars list of the calendars that can be displayed. "My Calendars" appears at the top of this list.
Notice that you get your own personal calendar, and you can add events to your calendar. You also get to decide who else can see your calendar, if anyone.
Days
Clicking on a day in the mini-calendar on the left chooses a day to display in the main calendar. You can specify multiple days to display by highlighting dates of interest.
Copying to Your Personal Calendar
Click on an event in a calendar, and an event window shows more detail. Under the "Search My Calendars" button in this window, there is a "More Actions..." box. Click this box, and choose "Copy to my calendar". Use this technique to have your personal calendar contain events that you want to attend.
Searching
At the top of the Google Calendar webpage there are, among other things, a text window and a "Search My Calendars" button. Use these to find events in the calendars in your calendars list.
You can also search to find calendars to add to your calendars list. Type "First Parish Arlington" (without the quotes) in the text window at the top of the webpage, and click on the "Search Public Calendars" button. The first three choices are the calendars displayed in the First Parish Upcoming Events webpage. Click on the "Add to calendar" button below the "Users of First Parish Arlington Building" listing, for example, and that calendar will be added to your calendars list.
Choosing Which Calendars to Display
Click on a box to the left of a calendar in the calendars list to hide all of its events. Click that box again and the events reappear.
Click on a down arrow to the right of a calendar in the calendars list and select "Display only this Calendar" to hide events in all the other calendars. Use the boxes to the left of the calendars in the calendars list to show their events again.
