Becoming a Lay Minister
The Shared Ministry Committee is appointed by the Parish Committee to select Lay Ministers and to evaluate and support Lay Ministry.
In April interested members of First Parish are invited to complete a written application to be sent to the Shared Ministry Committee. The Committee then interviews applicants and selects people who demonstrate (1) an understanding of the expectations of Lay Ministry, and (2) a natural bent for listening and compassion; an ability to maintain boundaries and confidentiality; and a consistent, responsible and stable presence. Both the suitability of individual candidates and the over-all balance of the group will be considered. Lay Ministers should be First Parish members and regular attendees at First Parish services for at least two years.
Lay Ministers begin their terms in the fall after a one-day Saturday training and meet one Wednesday per month from 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm.
Applications and further information are available in the Lay Ministry section of the First Parish website.
