Vigil: We Can End Gun Violence – Sunday, June 4 after worship
We Can End Gun Violence Vigil – Sunday June 4th at First Parish
The horror of gun violence continues to ravage our country. First Parish Arlington is heartbroken and we join the chorus of voices calling for action. As of mid-May, there have been 225 mass shootings in this country. Hardly a day goes by without hearing about a new tragedy. Guns are now the leading cause of death for our children. This year, the 9th National Gun Violence Awareness Day falls on June 2, kicking off Wear Orange Weekend. Virtual and in-person events will occur across Massachusetts and the nation, including First Parish.
First Parish will host a vigil on Sunday, June 4th on the front lawn. Gathering at 11:30, formal remarks begin at noon with wrap up expected around 12:30pm. Additionally, a public witness banner will remind all that We Can End Gun Violence.
Be creative! Wear or hold anything with orange in it — no need to dress in orange head to toe —a shirt, jewelry, scarf, pants, skirt (dogs can wear an orange bandana!), a sign. The color orange honors the more than 120 lives cut short and the hundreds more wounded by gun violence every day. We will partner with Moms Demand Action and others in the Community. Together, we can end gun violence.
As Unitarian Universalists, we stand with groups such as Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America in their push for common-sense public safety laws shown to reduce gun violence and save lives.
