Giving First for May

Since 2008 the Transgender Emergency Fund of Massachusetts, Inc., a Black Trans led non-profit organization, has provided assistance to homeless and low-income trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people living in Massachusetts.

Transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming individuals experience high rates of discrimination while trying to obtain basic social services. In Massachusetts, 17% of transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people live in poverty compared to 11.5% of the general population. Sixty-five percent reported being discriminated against last year in public spaces. The Transgender Emergency Fund of Massachusetts, Inc. was founded to respond to and assist these individuals.

Director, Chastity Bowick credits the Transgender Emergency Fund of MA with saving her life in 2012-2013 by assisting her to find housing and support that allowed her to leave behind survival street economy work and rebuild her life. She says she is inspired to give back to the community to empower and uplift trans and gender diverse people to become advocates, social justice warriors, lawyers, doctors, and other service professionals.

The Transgender Emergency Fund is the only organization dedicated to supporting low income and homeless trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming individuals in Massachusetts. The Transgender Emergency Fund provides assistance with homelessness prevention, rental start-up, utilities, nutrition, and personal supplies. The Transgender Emergency Fund’s service availability varies depending on donations.

Currently the Transgender Emergency Fund is working with state and local officials on a plan to obtain a physical building to provide safe transitional housing for trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people.

The Transgender Emergency Fund works to create a world where the trans and gender diverse community is free from physical, mental, and medical voilence and harm; where they do not struggle to meet basic material and emotional needs and they have equal access to housing, healthcare, education, and community.

The Transgender Emergency Fund of MA is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization and is operated solely on donations. To learn more about the Transgender Emergency Fund of MA, to donate to their programming, or to get involved, check out their website at TransEmergencyFund.org
